Energy assistance available for customers as heating season approaches
Michigan Gas Utilities (MGU) reminds customers to check their eligibility for energy assistance and credits as the winter heating season approaches. Applications for energy assistance can be made through the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and the Michigan Department of Treasury.
The MDHHS and Michigan Department of Treasury help residents with energy and home weatherization costs through the Home Heating Credit, State Emergency Relief, Weatherization Assistance and Michigan Energy Assistance Program (MEAP).
- Home Heating Credit – Offers assistance in covering heating costs.
- State Emergency Relief – Helps residents in need of immediate assistance with energy-related expenses.
- Weatherization Assistance – Provides energy-efficient home improvements, such as additional insulation or air sealing, at no charge.
- MEAP – Offers assistance with paying energy bills and effectively managing energy costs.
Additional information about energy assistance programs can be found on the MGU website, by contacting 211 or by calling the MDHHS energy assistance line at 855-275-6424. Customers with questions about their natural gas bill or payment arrangements through MGU should call 800-401-6402.
Eligibility for all four programs is based in part on household income. Residents do not need to be behind in paying their natural gas bills to receive assistance through the Home Heating Credit or Weatherization Assistance programs.
To apply for assistance through the Home Heating Credit and State Emergency Relief programs, residents should visit the MDHHS website to complete an application form. Residents who wish to apply for Weatherization Assistance also should visit the MDHHS website to receive contact information for the program operator in their county of residence. Residents interested in applying for assistance through the MEAP should call 211 for contact information for their county provider. Home Heating Credit applications will not be available until mid-to-late January.
